Sketch KL Meetup Dec 2019
This was freaking 2 months ago. But I just put it here, just in case my employer or my future employer (pffft..) ever stalk me, so they'll know that I am exposed to this kinda knowledge-sharing event. Honestly, I'm hooked into this gig of going to knowledge-sharing events. I swear, I would mind going to any of this kinda event in the SEA region if my wallet is sufficient enough to take me there.
This event was held on 20th Dec 2019 at Digi HQ, Subang. I was glad to drive my team there, as my previous dream freelance job was to be a grab driver — since I love driving tho the traffic to reach there was hella bad. Kelsey my co-driver said, I am the first non-grab driver friend without driving temper — I felt flattered and my motivation to be a good driver increased 100%.
I am also planned to attend this with my university friend, Aisyah and Diana. We might also be expecting to see our senior, Kak Nasuha. I heard she's working with Digi, here.
I'm not going to lie to you, and I am not faking myself, so I make a visual on why I attend an event like this.
The crew said 'You can take one'. So I humbly took one, but my team took a lot, lol. It was not so clear what their exact intention was. Is it "Take one of each freebie" or "everyone can only take one". Because of that, just take one decal for me. I would say that I am a legit 'Lawful Good' example.
The food might not be as grand as the previous events, but free food is a blessing for all.
One thing about the venue, the Digi HQ office is hella cool, surrounded by hills, nature and they have their own man-made lake with a waterfall, what a Zen ambiance. But I would still prefer my current office, welp, we got Mid Valley shopping mall just a few steps away.
The event was sponsored by Digi and Lottie, Lottie is the thing that I learnt last year. It is a good skill for me as I love to illustrate stuff, with Lottie I can make them move and animate around; but most importantly, the animations remains lightweight and optimized for performance.
Also, take a quick trip to my Lottie profile because I am a fan of Lottie, HERE.
The first speaker was Jan (Pronounced as Yan) Takac. Based on his name, I'm sure he's a Czech or a Slovaks. He's from Accenture, a design consulting company so I'm sure he's good at giving talks. Previously he was a colleague of Ili, the RN dev in my current company. What a small world. Wait. Do I kind enough to share his insight with you guys?
The next speaker was Jet Choy from Digi. I have a mixed feelings listening to him. Welp, since he showed the Syok app on his presentation, it sparked some fire to my fuel (lol, this is a self made up idiom). But I don't want to spill any tea here.
The last speaker was the most anticipated speaker by probably all of the crowd, Randy J Hunt from Grab - and he's an American, so, as Asian as we all are - admiring foreigners are somewhat a weird norm.
I remembered Randy's words better that the other speakers because during those time I can't take the note using my Samsung phone because my friend Diana was plying with it. Randy said:

The best thing about the event, THE FREE STUFF. |

Black coffee, karipap, popia and moist cake with cream icing. |

Seeing my team grows like this, I feel like now I can |

Since I'm an avid user of the Samsung Note's SPen, here's the note on Jan's insight, hand-written by yours truly. I hope my handwriting is readable tho.

I'm sorry but by the time he speaks, my energy level already dropped and I started to get sleepy and distracted. Luckily his dark-mode friendly, minimal presentation template worked fine on me.
- Writing as in texts, copywriting, micro copy will be an essential form/part of design. (True, how you play with your copy really can set up the tone for the product that you're making).
- Dying of the design system trend. Wow.
- Design tools will change, they will evolve over times, so don't just be loyal to one. Go explore. (Yeah man, actually many of the pros have changed to Figma)
- He recommended is this book and this one.
I think I'm obsessed over my team. I am so blessed to have them. |
Yo, this is a sincere smile. |
I only managed to take pictures with Diana and Aisyah. I forgot about Kak Nasuha, lol. I'm soooo effing proud to be with them. Aisyah, Diana and me, we used to sit in a row together, sleep together during classes, feel kancheong together before the deadline and now standing side to sides like this made me feel so happy. How time flies and now, we're successfully ended up in the same industry, rocking the same career. Awww (say with me, 'Awww').
Diana, Aan, Aisyah. |
Okay, maybe that's all. I hope Sketch KL will organize more meetups like this. Looking forward to next time. Ok, bye.
Before I go, please take some time to appreciate this moist cake topping. |
